Which English exam should I take for immigration to Canada?
For Canadian immigration through IRCC's Express Entry system, you can take either IELTS General Training or CELPIP General. Both are accepted and will generate CLB scores used in your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) calculation. IELTS is more widely available globally; CELPIP uses more conversational, everyday Canadian English which many candidates find more natural. How long is an English exam score valid?
Most major English certifications are valid for two years from the date of the test. This applies to IELTS, TOEFL, OET, PTE Academic, and CELPIP. The CAMBRIDGE English Test is also valid for two years. Some institutions may accept older scores at their discretion, but for immigration purposes, you should always assume the two-year rule applies strictly.
Can I take my English exam online at home?
Yes — some exams now offer home editions. The CAMBRIDGE English Test is entirely home-based. TOEFL offers a Home Edition with a human proctor. PTE Academic and IELTS currently require you to visit a test centre for the official exam. CELPIP is also centre-based. Rules may vary by country, so always check the official test provider's website for your location.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?
IELTS Academic is for applicants seeking undergraduate or postgraduate academic admission, and for professionals seeking registration with regulatory bodies (like doctors or nurses in some countries). IELTS General Training is for those applying for secondary education, work experience, or immigration to English-speaking countries. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both; the Reading and Writing sections differ — General Training uses more everyday texts and requires you to write a letter (not a report) in Task 1.
How many times can I retake the exam if I fail?
There are no official limits on how many times you can retake IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or CELPIP. OET also allows retakes of individual subtests. The CAMBRIDGE English Test limits you to twice per 30-day period. Most people who fail simply need better exam-specific preparation, not more general English study. We've also run effective 2–3 week intensive programmes for candidates with upcoming exams — though we don't recommend leaving it that late if you can help it. The earlier you start, the more comfortable and effective your preparation will be.

What IELTS band do I need for a UK Skilled Worker Visa?
For most UK Skilled Worker Visa routes, you need to meet English language requirements — typically IELTS at CEFR B1 (Band 4.0 overall, with no less than 4.0 in any skill). For healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists) registering with the NMC, GMC, or GPhC, the requirement is usually B2 level or higher — typically IELTS 7.0–7.5, or OET Grade B. Requirements can change, so always verify with your specific regulatory body or UKVI before booking your exam.
What TOEFL score do I need for graduate school in the USA?
It varies by institution and programme, but most strong US graduate programmes require a total TOEFL score of 80–100+. Top programmes (Harvard, MIT, Stanford) typically require 100–105 or above. Individual section minimums are also common — many programmes require at least 22–25 in each of the four sections. Always check the requirements of each specific programme you're applying to, as they can differ significantly even within the same university.
