What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a computer-based English proficiency exam developed by Pearson. It is accepted by thousands of academic institutions and governments worldwide, and is particularly favoured for Australian Skilled Migration through SkillSelect, UK Global Talent Visa applications, and New Zealand immigration pathways.
PTE Academic uses an integrated testing format — many tasks test more than one skill simultaneously. For example, the Summarize Spoken Text task tests both your listening comprehension and your written summarisation ability. This integrated approach means preparation must be specific and strategic.
Critically, PTE is scored entirely by AI — there is no human examiner involved. This removes any possibility of examiner bias, but it also means the scoring criteria are algorithmic and consistent. Once you understand what the algorithm rewards, PTE preparation becomes considerably more predictable than other exams.

PTE Score Requirements for Australian Immigration
For Australian Skilled Migration through SkillSelect, most visa subclasses require a minimum PTE score of 65 in each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Some visas require 50; others require 79. The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) requires a minimum of 50 in each communicative skill.
For Australian student visas, most institutions require an overall PTE score of 50–64. English-language courses and some professional programmes may require 58–65+.

Cracking the PTE Algorithm
PTE Speaking is scored by AI on four criteria: Content, Pronunciation, Oral Fluency, and — for tasks like Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture — the accuracy of the ideas presented. Understanding these criteria changes how you prepare.
For example, in Read Aloud — one of the highest-value PTE tasks — the AI rewards clear pronunciation and natural rhythm. Pausing in the wrong places, rushing, or mispronouncing specific sounds will lower your score even if your English is strong. We teach you exactly how to pace yourself.
Step 1. Read Aloud
- Speak at a natural conversational rhythm — the AI penalises both rushing and word-by-word reading. Practise reading aloud daily until connected speech feels automatic.
- Focus on stress patterns — content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) carry stress; function words (the, a, of, to) do not. Getting stress right is the single biggest pronunciation gain most candidates make.
Step 2. Repeat Sentence
- Do not try to write the sentence down during playback — you will fall behind. Instead, chunk the sentence into three or four meaningful phrases as you listen, and hold the meaning, not every word.
- If you lose a word mid-sentence, keep going — a fluent partial repetition scores better than a hesitant perfect one. The AI scores Content, Pronunciation, and Oral Fluency simultaneously.
Step 3. Describe Image
- The template: introduce the image type (5 sec) → describe the main trend or comparison (15 sec) → highlight the most significant specific data point (12 sec) → close with a one-sentence overall observation (8 sec). This structure works regardless of whether the image is a bar chart, pie chart, line graph, or diagram.
- Do not try to describe every data point — the AI scores Content based on whether you addressed the main features, not whether you mentioned every figure. Completeness over comprehensiveness.
Step 4. Write Essay
- Target exactly 250–280 words — under 200 is penalised, over 300 wastes time. Structure: a three-sentence introduction (context, your position, essay outline), two body paragraphs (one argument each, with an example), and a two-sentence conclusion.
- Vocabulary range is scored — avoid repeating the same words from the prompt. Practise paraphrasing key concepts using synonyms, and build a bank of 10–15 academic phrases (consequently, in contrast, it is widely acknowledged that…) that you can deploy across any essay topic.
Step 5. Write from Dictation
- As the audio plays, type immediately — do not wait for the sentence to end. Type what you hear in real time, even if you are not certain of spelling. A close approximation of a word often still scores; a blank never does.
- After the audio ends, use the remaining time to review spelling, capitalisation, and missed words — not to rewrite. Most marks are lost on common words (their vs there, its vs it's, articles, prepositions) rather than on unfamiliar vocabulary.
